monolith was transformed into an impenetrable royal citadel by King Kashyapa during his brief,

turbulent reign from 477 to 495 AD. Fearing retribution after seizing the throne from his father

and exiling his brother, Kashyapa abandoned the traditional capital of Anuradhapura to

construct a lavish, highly secure palace in the sky.

The journey to the summit begins through the perfectly symmetrical Royal Gardens, which

showcase the oldest surviving landscaped water gardens in Asia. Here, an intricate network of

underground terracotta pipes, stone channels, and pressure chambers continues to feed elegant

fountains that bubble up naturally during the rainy season. As you ascend the sheer rock face

via secure steel staircases, you enter a sheltered rock pocket housing the world-famous Sigiriya

Frescoes. Painted using earth pigments on wet plaster, these vibrant, centuries-old portraits

depict ethereal, jewelry-laden maidens believed to represent either celestial nymphs (apsaras)

or the king’s concubines.

Higher up, the path skirts past the Mirror Wall, a highly polished brick masonry wall coated in a

smooth glaze made from egg whites, wild lime, and honey. Over the centuries, visitors left

thousands of poetic inscriptions on this wall, recording their awe of the frescoes. The final

ascent begins at the northern terrace, where two monumental stone lion paws flank the

entrance. Originally, a colossal brick lion stood guard here, with the staircase entering through

its open mouth—giving the site its name, Sinha-Giriya (Lion Rock). At the very summit lie the

multi-tiered ruins of the royal palace, complete with rock-cut swimming pools, throne rooms,

and foundations that offer breathtaking, 360-degree views across the endless jungle plains

below.
