Unawatuna Beach

Protected by a large offshore coral reef, this golden-sand bay is famous for its calm, gentle

swimming waters, making it a safe option for families and casual swimmers compared to the

rougher surf breaks found along other parts of the southern coast.

The beach is lined with a lively strip of open-air restaurants, beach bars, and boutique dive

shops, creating an energetic tropical atmosphere. Visitors can spend their days relaxing on sun

loungers, swimming in the warm water, or trying water sports like paddleboarding and jet

skiing.

At the far western end of the bay, a rocky hill rises out of the water, topped by a large white

Buddha statue and the serene Welle Devalaya (beach temple). Walking up the short path to the

temple provides a panoramic view across the entire crescent of Unawatuna Beach. The

surrounding village of Unawatuna is packed with trendy cafes, yoga studios, and markets selling

local handicrafts, making it an excellent base for travelers looking to balance historical

exploration in Galle with a classic beach holiday.
